Embrace Technology with Birde

Embracing technology with children has incredible scope to bring about 21st Century learning skills and new discoveries.  Both the EYLF and Melbourne Declaration refer to the need to have access and learn digital technologies in order to be an active participant in today’s society. Therefore, it is imperative that educators consider innovative ways to incorporate the use of technology where children are actively engaged.

Birde is proudly supported by some of the world’s leading content providers such as ABC Kids, Nickelodeon, Dinosnores, Storybots, Omens Studios, Funky Books and many more and has the capacity to support learning in Literacy, Music, Movement, Drama and Mathematics either independently or with others.

BIRDE have launched an innovative multimedia device for children to partake in hands-on, practical engagement with technology. The interactive, portable device allows children to be at the forefront of accessing and controlling a library of music, audiobooks and video content.

Encouraging the use of technology as a tool for learning to open educational opportunities for all children is an essential component of the educator’s role. Children as young as 12 months can engage with the device by simply tapping the Seed over the Birde icon to activate a diverse range of safe, informative and child-friendly content to sing, dance, rest, listen or view. Creating shared technology experiences between children and educators optimises the potential for children’s learning as well as supporting them to collaborate and communicate effectively with their peers.

Focusing on using technology with an emphasis on supporting learning, creativity and positive relationships with others will ensure that experiences are engaging and form part of children’s life-long learning journey.

Mathematics has been long regarded an important part of Early Childhood pedagogy. Since Friedrich Frobel founded the first kindergarten in 1837, he developed his ‘Spielgaben’ or ‘Gifts’ that embraced mathematical concepts of symmetry, shape and number. The series of gifts were the first ‘educational’ playthings and are made of natural materials and are open-ended, specifically designed to demonstrate the key concept of ‘unity’ that can be recognised in play.

The theme for 2019 National Science Week is Destination Moon: more missions, more science,

This theme is a way for teachers and their students to discover past missions to the Moon and space programs that have solved some of the seemingly unsolvable problems—and current and future space programs, operations and missions. Many of these use big picture thinking in science to solve problems, and technology, engineering and mathematics to design new solutions. This will help forge our future paths in the areas of space operations, space science, Earth observations, positioning systems and communications.

We have created an easy but stunning DIY Moon activity that will be sure to get the entire classroom involved, featured in the Term 3 edition of edextras: your inspiration publication.
