Create your own solar system, planet, rocket launcher or UFO with these space inspired art and craft activities.

Crazy solar system

You will need:

Step by Step:

  • Either using the planet guide in the solar system pack or your imagination, paint the planets different colours
  • Once the colour paint is dry add a thin coat of PVA and sprinkle Glitter over, doing this over the activity tray saves a big clean up and helps collect excess glitter to use again (less waste)
  • Using 3-in-1 Jewellery Tool snip different lengths of wire and connect planets as shown in directions accompanying Science Crazy Decofoam Solar System Kit.

Straw rocket launcher

You will need:

Step by Step:

  • Simply draw a rocket shape onto a piece of A4 Cover Paper and cut this out
  • Then trace the rocket shape you just cut out, onto another piece of A4 Cover Paper and cut this out also. You now have two exact some rocket shapes which make the front and back of your rocket launcher
  • Now add some colour and detail to your rocket. We used Micador Safety Markers to  decorate our rocket launcher
  • Now use a Glue Stick to cover the edges of the inside of each rocket shape (excluding the bottom edge and leaving enough free space to insert a straw into the middle) and stick the two shapes together
  • To complete your rocket place the straw into the middle
  • Now your rocket is ready to be launched! Blow as hard as you can into the straw and watch your rocket fly across the room.

UFO with alien pilot

You will need:

Step by step:

  • Paint the outside of a paper plate with Silver Metallic Paint, let dry then add  another coat if needed and let dry
  • Using PVA glue or double sided tape add rhinestones around the edge of the UFO
  • Cut off one 'cup' or section of egg carton and turn upside down. Using glue or double sided tape add 2 Joggle Eyes to the front and 2 Florist Wire antennae to the top by poking through cardboard
  • Using glue or tape stick to centre of UFO
  • Add some more Rhinestones around the pilot and he's ready to phone home.

Clay Planets

You will need:

  • Crayola Model Magic Natural Colours 373464 or School White Clay 411876
  • Glitter Paint 500ml Set of 11 Colours 339275
  • Our Solar System Chart 381707 or Giant Magnetic Solar System 360370

Step by step:

  • Mould planets by assessing shape and scale using the solar system chart for reference.
  • Using model magic or school white clay, roll estimated sized balls to represent each of the planets e.g. Jupiter will be the biggest ball and pluto the smallest. For Saturn, roll out a long sausage type shape and attach it to the outside of the ball to represent the ring
  • Look at the different colours of the planets and paint balls accordingly to represent each e.g. Mercury will be red and Earth will be blue with small green shapes. Or use your imagination to create your own planet from another galaxy.

World Space Week is held from October 4 to October 10.
