Support children to understand the importance of healthy bones and bodies with these five craft activites. Try these during Healthy Bones Action Week, formerly National Healthy Bones Week, held from August 3 to August 10. 

1.       Mouth poster, toothbrush and toothpaste

You will need:

  • Rainbow Cover Paper Pink A4  (Pack of 100) 436875
  • Cotton Filters (Pack of 100) 213546
  • Chenille Stems (Pack of 200) 003152

Step by step:

  • Cut out an elongated oval shape from the pink paper and fold in half
  • Draw a tongue and colour red
  • Cut the cotton filter into small lengths (approx. 1.5cm L)
  • Stick the filter pieces around the outside edges of the mouth to make teeth.
  • Cut a long thin piece of paper or cardboard for the toothbrush handle (approx. 5cm W x 25cm L)
  • Cut a plain white piece of paper to make the toothbrush bristles (approx. 3.5cm W x 10cm L)
  • On the long edge of the bristles piece of paper make lots of cuts half-way across to create a fringe effect
  • To make the toothpaste, select two or three different colour stems and twist together
  • This activity is a great tool for beginning a dialogue about teeth cleaning habits, favourite toothbrush, what colour it is, what toothpaste they like, how many times a day do they clean their teeth etc

 2.       Skeleton EE-ZY Mayze

You will need:

  • EE-zy Mayze (Bulk pack of 1,500) 324772

Step by step:

  • To make your skeleton, simply dampen the ends of each piece of EE-zy Mayze and press together. The material will stick together on contact
  • You may like to place a drawing of a human or animal skeleton under your work to use as a guide

 3.       Cardboard Milk Carton

You will need:

  • Cardboard Milk Carton (pack of 30) 415073
  • Kindy Glitz Crystalite Colours (Set of 5) 162040
  • Crayola Washable Classic Markers (Pack of 32) 116020
  • Pre-School & Infants Paint 2 litre (Set of 10 colours) 264036
  • Tape or glue

Step by step:

  • Decorate while unassembled
  • Design your own milk carton. You can write the word “milk” or draw a cow, dairy or farm scene.
  • Follow the folds to assemble and use glue or tape to hold in place

 4.       Newspaper skeleton

You will need:

  • Newspaper skeleton 411157
  • Newspaper
  • Tape

Step by step:

  • To make the newspaper rod bones, tape one rod-tube to one end of the sheet of newspaper. Repeat with a second rod tube on the other side of the sheet.
  • Tightly roll the newspaper sheet then secure the roll with tape
  • The newspaper rod-tubes will now lock into the special skeleton connectors when you assemble your skeleton
  • To lock the rod-tube into the connector, squeeze the tube, push onto the connector and release. Friction will hold it in place

 5. Calcium Garden Collage

Create your own calcium garden collage to help children understand which foods help to give them strong, healthy bones.

You will need:

  • Wooden calcium rich food (pack of 24) 415056
  • Crayola Washable Poster Paint (Set of 11 Colours) 264010
  • Paint Roller Tray and 4 Sponge Rollers 206722
  • Canvas Art Banner 357251

Step by step:

  • Roll out canvas art banner
  • Pour paint into painting trays
  • Roll roller into the paint trays and roll off excess paint
  • Select a wooden shape
  • Roll paint covered roller over the wooden shape to completely cover
  • Press the painted side of the shape down onto the canvas art banner
  • Use different colours and shapes to create a calcium garden collage
  • Hang the banner either horizontally or vertically in the room by the six metal grommets on each end attached to the banner
