My Island Home features lyrics by Neil Murray and illustrations by children from Pupunya and Galiwinku with additional paintings by Queensland artist Peter Hudson.

We know the song; we know its heartfelt message. Originally composed by Neil Murray and performed by the Wurrumpi Band, Christine Anu and countless others, My Island Home lyrics are timeless and have a dreamlike quality.

For us it’s the images that accompany the lyrics that make this an instant classic. There is a refreshing freedom in the illustrations by the children from Pupunya and Galiwinku. Additionally, the Queensland artist Peter Hudson provides some striking artwork that enhances the lyrics.

Educators will inspire children in song, dance and creative arts. We suggest copying the lyrics onto A3 paper to allow students to create their own artworks, inspired by the lyrics. Teachers can promote using traditional Aboriginal colours and contemporary designs. This is a perfect song to have with the school choir (why not start one?) With older readers, these lyrics could be adapted into a play.
